Inspired by the classic fairy tale all girls love… that’s been infused with girl-empowerment and a re-vamped Cinderella character for today’s thinking young women-to-be.
Motherless Ella is cursed as a baby by her ditzy fairy godmother with the “blessing” of obedience. That means anyone can knowingly or unwittingly take control of Ella’s free will by ordering to do anything they want… even if she doesn’t want to do it! You can imagine what kind mileage a wicked stepmother and some ugly stepsisters can get out of that kind of handicap. Clearly, the poor girl has to go on a quest through ogre-infested forests to find her fairy godmother and get her to reverse the “blessing.”
Anne Hathaway is a lovely, feminine, strong, and engaging role model as Ella (who has a very fun Queen cover song with a “Can Anybody Find Me Somebody To Love” number.) Hugh Dancy makes for a charming Prince Charmant. All the sidekicks and villiains keep the fun rolling along, especially Cary Elwes (Princess Bride) as Prince Charm’s dubious uncle who figures out Ella’s secret vulnerability.
